Parkinson Support and Wellness is sharing this information on behalf of...

We are proud to be part of a team of researchers from across the country who are leading efforts to study whether a medicine called zoledronic acid can reduce fractures in people with Parkinson’s Disease or parkinsonism.

The study is called TOPAZ, which stands for Trial Of Parkinson’s And Zoledronic Acid.

Did you know that people with Parkinson’s Disease or parkinsonism have a higher risk of fractures? The risk is highest for those over age 60.

What is the purpose of the study?

  • We want to learn if a treatment for osteoporosis can help lower fracture risk in people with Parkinson’s Disease or parkinsonism, whether or not they have osteoporosis. Zoledronic acid is an FDA approved treatment for osteoporosis (weak bones).

Who is funding this study?

  • The study is being paid for by the National Institute of Aging, part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

If I take part, what will I be asked to do?

  • All parts of this study can be done from the comfort of your own home. There is no cost to take part. Here’s what will happen if you enroll:

After you sign the study consent form, you will:

  • Complete a short survey online about your health history.

  • Have a video visit with a study neurologist to make sure you are able to join the study.

If you can go on with the study:

  • A study nurse will arrange to visit you in your home to do a brief exam.

  • You will receive a 45-minute infusion of either zoledronic acid or a placebo (selected at random).

For the next few years, we will:

  • Check in with you by email, mail or phone every 4 months to ask if you had any fractures.

How can I join the study?
